A customized version of Avory is in use on the signboards and branding at thousands of establishments offering Pilsner Urquell beer. This new signage unifies the appearance of the brewery’s partner pubs and restaurants.

About Avory for Pilsner Urquell

The ambitious unification of façades and placards across all restaurants and pubs partnering with breweries from the Pilsner Urquell (Asahi Beer) group was designed and typographically specified by Veronika Rút Fullerová and Lumír Kajnar. Following their lead, we have provided a customized version of Avory in order to make it work with a diverse range of pub names. Rounding out the character set are supplemental wayfinding arrows and pictograms.

The straightforward design of Avory lends itself easily to different visual contexts without overwhelming the message, whether painted or illuminated, adorning a window, a wall, or an awning. Yet the typeface maintains a slight whimsy in its voice to reinforce the Pilsner Urquell brand. On the practical level, Avory’s narrow proportions supports even the longest of pub names comfortably on signage.

The typeface, designed by Sláva Jevčinová, was an ideal stylistic fit for this project. It is inspired by the lettering work of Jaroslav Benda, a prolific painter, graphic artist, and a designer most known for his art-deco period between the World Wars – which was also the golden era of Czechoslovak pubs in the young Czechoslovak Republic.
