With his typeface Huronia Ross Mills takes up the challenge of supporting all the native languages of the Americas, with the hope to help with the preservation of the endangered ones. In order to promote the typeface and its good cause, we decided to design a set of three posters which present native American stories in Cherokee, Nuuchahnulth, and Inuktitut, as well as in English. Anna Giedryś –  the designer of these posters – created beautiful illustrations to accompany each of these stories. Get the posters in our merchandise section. Let us know via email if it should be a Christmas gift, we can arrange for express shipping.

Granshan is one of the most prestigious international competitions for type design, focussing on non-Latin scripts. We were proud to find that this year Eskorte Arabic by Elena Schneider has won the first prize in the category of Arabic text typefaces, Skolar Gujarati by David Březina has won the second prize in the Indic text typefaces category, and best of all, Serendip Sinhala by Rafael Saraiva, which is scheduled for a Rosetta release (it includes a brilliant Latin component btw), has won the first prize in the Indic category and also received the grand prize from Granshan! We are deeply honoured and humbled with this appreciation of our work.
July 2013
David Březina will be presenting at the ATypI conference in Amsterdam this year to discuss the challenges on the crossroads of linguistics, typography, and computer science. The thesis is that multilingual type design is not only the drawing of nice lettershapes, it also deals with their optimization for output, that is, with typographic layout, and the demands of target media. Some of the challenges lie in extending the typographic repertoire of one script (i.e. writing system) with tools similar to those of another. Other challenges lie in adapting the scripts to a typographic system or to the limitations of certain kinds of media be it laser printing or rasterized screens.
July 2013

David Březina was invited to speak at the Smashing Conference in Freiburg (Germany) in September. He will talk about the mechanics behind developing larger type families such as the ever-growing Skolar type system and discuss approaches to making type families functional, easy to use, and cross-platform… and how to stay sane while doing that. But furthermore he will unveil quite a bit from Rosetta behind-the-scenes and show how we are rethinking the way we present and license typefaces to its beloved users and our journey to finding a better way of dealing with (web)fonts.

Read more about this handsome typeface on a dedicated page and in its PDF specimen.

Skolar, designed by David Březina, will be moving home from TypeTogether to Rosetta from 1 April. Having all of Skolar’s scripts available in one place will consolidate Rosetta’s library and simplify licensing of the family. As the family expands, we hope it will also enable the flagship typeface to explore new territories. Some distributors (MyFonts, FontShop) have already made the transfer and others will follow in due course.

Rosetta is committed to providing continuous updates and support to all customers, no matter where they bought their previous versions. Let us know if you have any questions or simply stay in touch to receive our news.

Web Innovation Series published an article about the problems of the Farsi typography on the web and the solution we have provided for Voice of America. Some flattering testimonials from the design team included. Very happy to have happy customers.

This font development is similar to the birth of Arial or Helvetica in English. “The results were stunning,” added Bahmani. (…) Bahmani tested NASSIM against the TAHOMA font and concluded that “the results demonstrated a 5x increase in reading speed.” (…) The new Persian VOA site (as shown in the graphic above) “was extremely well received and many users commented on how much better the site looks and how much more readable the text appears; there are no spacing, no kerning, and no proportion flaws,” added Bahmani.

We are proud to announce that Rosetta fonts are now available to use as webfonts in two different flavors: webfont service and self-hosting. This is particularly important for Arabic web typography given the lack of high quality Arabic webfonts.

1. For the convenience of those small businesses and startup sites looking to have high quality fonts for a limited budget we have partnered up with the webfont service bureau Fontdeck. Their solution requires no special coding skills, and they offer a very fast and reliable infrastructure.

2. For larger companies that deal with several million pageviews per month, and have more demanding needs in terms of bandwidth and infrastructure we also offer our webfonts specially customized for self hosting.

Learn more about these on our webfonts page or simply contact us.
